Description | Medieval studies is the integrated study of the historical and cultural period known also as the Middle Ages. The influence of this period, between Antiquity and the Modern Age, is wide-ranging. Studying the Middle Ages helps one to understand the historical developments in science, law, literature, art, architecture, and philosophy that, in addition to helping us to understand these fields today, are also worth studying on their own merits. Studying the Middle Ages can also shed light on the origins of particular contemporary issues concerning religion, women, and conflict with and within the Middle East.
The medieval studies program is interdisciplinary, meaning that core courses are drawn from a number of different departments at Memorial. This integration of the methods and subject matter of several disciplines mirrors the pluralistic and inter-religious framework of the age.
