Description | Fire safety is emphasized in the context of the built environment and particularly its application to buildings. This course is for students aiming for senior roles after graduation in policy and direction roles. This requires some deeper attention to legal studies, risk management in the context of managing projects for fire safety problems for the built environment and related infrastructure. The education of the fire professional should cater for the many new developments and their associated problems occurring in the field of application. Innovation specifically cannot be covered in prescriptive solutions and hence the application of principles is the proposed method of solving problems. It is precisely the development of novel solutions within the often-contradictory constraints of safety, economy, law and technology which pose the Honours challenge. Integration across diverse fields in order to propose an acceptable design or management decision is the major feature of the degree. The course benefits from the activities of the University's Centre for Research in Fire and Hazard Sciences. The course demonstrates a strong, well co-ordinated research link, which contributes strongly to the relevance and currency of the content.
