Civil Engineering - Structural Engineering

Program Information

School:Western University
Faculty:Engineering
Degree:Bachelor; Co-op; Honours
Field of Study:Civil Engineering, General
Structural Engineering
Description:Civil engineering is focused on a number of areas of specialization including environmental engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering, and municipal engineering.

Civil engineering courses involve consideration of geology and soil mechanics (geotechnical engineering) for the design of building foundations, dams, walls, slopes, tunnels, and waste disposal facilities; the study of fluid mechanics; municipal engineering; case studies, which examine past successes and failures and provide students with an opportunity to learn from real-life experience; and a civil engineering design course which allows students to design an engineering facility similar to that which they would be expected to design when they graduate. The design project allows students to gain experience working with professional engineers and develop a network of contacts for future employment.

As an Engineering student, you'll have the option to enroll in the "With Co-Op" version of your program and complete a minimum of 3 co-op terms to graduate with a 'Bachelor of Engineering Science with Co-Op' degree. In addition to the practical experience and competitive salary you'll gain through summer and/or long-term co-ops, your employment will count towards the four years experience you need to be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
