Description:The Music Diploma (Classical) Program provides a rich introduction to music in an environment that nurtures the artistic and creative potential of our music students.

The program integrates theoretical, historical and performance studies, offering concentrations in piano, voice, guitar, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion and composition.

This two-year Diploma is transferable to a Bachelor of Music Degree and provides the foundation for further studies in other artist diplomas, including Music Education, Music Therapy and the Liberal Arts.

Admission Requirements

    • CapU Music Theory Placement Exam (70%) or MUS 109 (C+) or Royal Conservatory of Music Level 8 Theory
    • Ear test
    • Interview

    Current Grade 12 students can be conditionally accepted based on final Grade 11 grades or interim Grade 12 grades. Students can upload proof of grades (e.g. unofficial transcripts, copies of report cards) through EducationPlannerBC when applying to Capilano University. Final acceptance will be based on high school graduation and having met the program specific requirements.

    Note: All B.C. applicants must release their grades to CapU via the BC Ministry of Education at Student Transcripts Services (STS). Please do this as soon as possible.

    First year students can fulfill the theory requirement by successfully completing the Royal Conservatory of Music Level 8 Theory (Advanced Rudiments/Grade Two Rudiments), by achieving a minimum grade of 70% on the CapU Music Theory Placement Exam, or by achieving a minimum grade of C+ in MUS 109. Please note that MUS 109 credits cannot be counted towards completion of the Music Diploma and must be taken in addition to the required courses.

    Students interested in applying to the Bachelor of Music Therapy Degree can contact the Music Department for a list of recommended courses that should be taken in addition to the Music Diploma.
