How to Survive (and Thrive) on Your Internship Abroad
Useful tips on how to make your working abroad experience meaningful!
So you have read about how internships abroad sets you apart to
employers. You’ve heard the
stories about people who found direction in their careers after an international internship. Now you are preparing to put aside the comforts of home for an internship in a new country. Luckily, we have your back. Here’s our step-by-step guide for taking your internship abroad by storm:
Before you Leave
Amidst the flurry of goodbyes and packing (and re-packing three times to make sure you’re under the weight limit), it can be easy to forget why you’re going abroad. Spend time reflecting on your goals for your internship. Research the company and think about specific ways that you could use your skills there, and think about how to apply what you have learned in your previous work experience.
The First Few Weeks
The first week in a new job is always a little stressful! Take your time settling in and making connections. Say ‘yes’ to after-work drinks with your co-workers and make an effort to get to know everyone, not just the other interns. Your friendliness will make a lasting impression on your employers and co-workers.
Halfway Through the Internship
The cultural differences between your host country and home country are an asset to you: use your unique perspective of working and studying in multiple countries to help you make positive changes to your new workplace.
When You Get Home
Having a network abroad will enhance your career, so keep in touch with your co-workers. Small gestures like emailing them when you see something that reminds you of an office joke, or commenting on an Instagram post go a long way! This way, it will feel more natural to ask for references.
