Questions to Ask Before You Apply to University

Applying to university can seem like a daunting process, but don’t worry, with the right tools and resources, you’ll be able to sift through your options and apply to the schools you’re most interested in.

Here are some questions to guide you through applying to university.

Does this school have my program(s)?

It’s okay if you’re still unsure about your program(s) of choice, but it’s helpful to identify a few you’re interested in at minimum. Once you do you can begin searching for schools that provide those programs, or ones that are similar. You want to give yourself the best set of options in your selection of universities.

Do I have options to customize my degree?

You might not have your top program(s) figured out yet, so the idea of a minor, specialization, or even double major may sound doubly daunting. But it’s also a great idea to scope out which schools give you the most options to customize your degree. For example, at Waterloo, students are able to pursue double majors, minors, specializations, diplomas, and certificates to demonstrate their expertise and interests.

What are the admission requirements?

Admission requirements vary based on the school and program(s) of interest. It's essential to know what grades to be working toward and which courses are mandatory before submitting your applications.

It’s also important to look out for programs that have special requirements like an essay, interview, portfolio, or audition. Keep in mind these may have different deadlines, so be sure to keep track of important dates to stay on top of your applications!

How much will it all cost?

Education is an investment, and there are significant costs associated with it — tuition, fees, textbooks, residence; as well as the money you’d spend on food and other expenses.

Consider student awards, scholarships, and other types of funding to alleviate the cost, as well as what opportunities the universities you’re looking at have for you to earn money. For example, at Waterloo, if you’re in our co-op program, you can earn up to $135,000 over the course of your degree (or between $9,600 - $22,500 per work term)!

When thinking about your program(s) of interest and which schools offer them, also consider opportunities like co-op or internships. If your top program(s) could be supplemented with co-op, that could put you at an advantage over others upon graduating.

At Waterloo there are more than 100 programs to choose from — and co-op is offered in almost all of them. In the largest co-op program in the world of its kind, you’ll be able to work toward a degree that’s both uniquely your own and highly advantageous post-graduation.

You may also be interested in unique opportunities like studying abroad. See what exciting prospects the universities you’re researching may be able to offer you!

Bonus tip: As you research universities, you’ll also notice that many offer campus tours to help you in your search. Take advantage of opportunities like these to really get a feel for what each school has to offer!

These are just a few questions to keep in mind when applying to university. The process differs wildly from person to person, so make sure you take the steps needed to help you choose the school that’s right for you.
