Thinking of Going to University?

You’ll want to find the right university for you, so before you apply, make sure you’ve done your research to find your best match. Think about the subjects you enjoy and what type of job you’d like at the end of it. Keep an open mind and don’t forget to look at similar subjects. If you like biology, look at courses like marine biology and zoology until you find the one that suits you best.

Once you’ve decided on the right type of course, have a look at the different universities that offer what you’re looking for. Bear in mind that although the course content and quality should be high on your list of priorities, there are so many other things to consider when choosing the perfect university for you. You’ll be spending a lot of your time outside the lecture room so think about the location, the social life, and the accommodation on offer.

Social media and the web

A great way to learn more about all the different universities and their courses is to go online and visit their websites. You’ll be able to get a feel for the university, see pictures and watch videos that will tell you more about what it’s like to study there.

It’s also a good tip to follow universities on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat for all the latest news, videos, blogs, and photos.

Grab a prospectus

If you’d rather have a hard copy of all the information, order a prospectus from the university’s website for free or grab one at a HE Fair if you’re visiting with your school or college.

Entry requirements

Check the course details to make sure your grades or expected grades match what they’re looking for. Also, see if you’ll need any specific work experience to get in.

Some courses will ask you to sit an entrance test or exam or prepare a piece of coursework while some universities will ask you to come in for an interview before offering you a place. But don’t worry, your school or college can arrange a mock interview so that you’re well prepared.

Attend an Open Day

There’s no better way of knowing if a university is the right fit for you than to attending an Open Day. You’ll be able to talk to students and staff and ask any questions you have as well as explore the area to see if you can see yourself living there.

Our virtual Open Day for 2024 will be Wednesday, October 2! Don’t miss this opportunity to get a feel for life at Bangor University.

Other things to consider

Size and location are important for you to consider. Are you looking for a big city university or a smaller close-knit community? Look at a map and see how far the University is in case you need to make frequent trips back home with your laundry or for family birthdays and special occasions.

What are the facilities like? How’s the university performing in league tables? Do they offer study abroad or work experience opportunities? These are all factors that you’ll need to consider before making up your mind.
